Steel Roofs

Steel Roofs

Unfortunately, roofs need repair or replacement over time. If you are considering a replacement or are working on a new construction project, consider a steel shingle system for unbeatable durability and performance. Modern metal roofing design and manufacturing techniques provide property owners with a variety that can reproduce the look and texture of other styles designed for sloped roofs. Steel can mimic asphalt, ceramic tile, slate tile, and even redwood or cedar.

Metal roofing provides the same curbside appeal as these traditional materials and is longer lasting and higher functioning. Galvanized steel is usually coated with protective zinc plating and finished with factory-applied paints or stone granule coatings.

With changing weather patterns, Georgia has seen more than its fair share of tropical disturbances. Steel shingles perform exceptionally well in wind uplift tests and often achieve 140 mph wind ratings, with some designs being capable of standing up to wind gusts as high as 180 mph. Roof uplift during storm conditions is more effectively controlled because interlocking steel shingle systems leave very little space for wind penetration when professionally installed.

Metal shingles typically installed in an interlocking system that holds the material firmly in place while hiding fasteners. Panels can be traditionally installed on the sub-roof or installed over existing roofing, including old asphalt shingles. While metal involves a greater up-front investment over asphalt, the many advantages and greater benefits can easily outweigh the additional cost.

Steel lasts longer than other types of roofing, and it can last up to three times longer than a normal asphalt system. Manufacturers normally carry a 50-year transferable warranty. There is virtually no maintenance required for steel roofing, as the shingles don’t split, corrode, crack, shift, or curl and offer the best possible fire-retardant ratings. They are far more resistant to high winds and typical storm conditions than asphalt.

You can expect normal maintenance that involves periodically checking the flashing around penetrations like vent pipes or gas pipes. Other than that, a simple cleaning as needed can keep it looking new. Steel provides a superior return on investment, as its growing popularity leads to increased resale value for homes and buildings. The return on installation cost can range as high as 94 percent when the increased market value is considered. You should also check with your insurance company because a new steel roof could even lower your premiums.

Metal roofing is a more environmentally sustainable choice than petroleum-based asphalt. They are often made of recycled metal and can be recycled again years down the road. Metal also helps a building use less energy. The greater sunlight reflection blocks more summer heat from a building’s interior.
